Cold. It sweeps through with the wind like dogs nipping at your heels. Leaves rattle on the trees, rustling with their own music of winter’s imminent arrival. Plants have turned barren; the last of the fall harvests are waiting on the vine. A final discovered cucumber marks the last of my garden’s produce, though the banana peppers I left on the plant for fun are now turning red. I wonder if they’re going from sweet to hot, as if they, too, know that we need extra warmth this time of year.

I’ve resisted turning on the furnace. Well, I did one night, and it kicked in twice, and just for about five minutes each time. Turning down the thermostat to 65, or lower, for me isn’t just a way to save money. It’s a way to save the Earth too. I don’t mind running around in long sleeved shirts and fuzzy slippers indoors. In fact, I bought three new pairs of long-sleeved flannel pjs just for that purpose. I once had a one-piece zip up sleeper like children’s sleepwear, except without the feet. I wish they made cozy outfits like that for adults.

Cold is a cycle, a way to make things dormant, and for allergy suffers like myself, a way to give us a few months of peace before Mother Nature unleashes her pollenated fury on us once more. I like the cold and I welcome winter with open arms.

Witchy Words Written by Mary CaelstoNothing in our lives stays static. The things we used to enjoy, we now look back at with fondness. Perhaps it was an author, a person, someone who helped us through the bad times, and when we realized that the bad times were over, we found we had nothing in common with that individual anymore. It’s tough, but it’s also a necessary part of life.

I think we look too much on the bad aspects of transition. In reality, it opens up a brave, new world for us. We emerge into something new, something better than what we had before. It’s like going through a tunnel. We can’t see what’s on the other side even though we know that there is an other side. There is something waiting for us, something new and exciting, we just have to wait and see what emerges.

Witchy Words Written by Mary CaelstoBalance. It’s a difficult word, and yet, it’s one that we think about. We have New Balance sneakers. We have Smart Balance butter. We talk about balanced diets and balanced nutrition. Countless news stories and magazines talk about balancing family and home life. And yet, are we ever really balanced at all?It can be tough. Balance is such a precarious thing. During the Olympics, along with my fellow Iowans and countless others, I watched Shawn Johnson on the balance beam. On a four inch wide piece of lumber, she performed amazing feats of acrobatics. Her poise and grace belied the fact that she stood on a such a small space. I don’t think many of us could walk straight across the balance beam, let alone leap and jump as if we were made of air.

And yet, in truth, that’s what we’re asked to do. And this equinox reminds us of the precious balance we all have in our lives. It’s only twice a year where the length of day and night are equal. The other 363 days things are skewed either one way or the other.

I think most of us could say that our balance is like that too…

Witchy Words Written by Mary Caelsto
Well, I’ll confess that I chose this week’s theme because of the weather. You see, I don’t like storms. I should. I used to think that thunderstorms with nice rumbly thunder were just fine. But somehow, they became not-fine. And now, I am obsessive (compulsive?) about checking the National Weather Service’s website, finding out where the severe weather areas are, and worrying as much as one person can worry until the front moves through.

I don’t like living that way. Storms are a natural part of the world and the wondrous things in it. Without storms we wouldn’t have rain, and without rain, well we wouldn’t have flowers or gardens. Storms bring a cleansing, albeit a harsh one, to the land. And they can be truly stunning in their own right.

Like their environmental counterparts, personal storms can have the same effect. I’ve been going through my share of those too, looking at what I want to do, where and why, and figuring out how to make it happen. Dreams have been dusted off, built back up again, and others have been given a tearful farewell that in the end, turned out to be not so tearful at all.I think we get too fearful of storms.

In the case of the weather (for example where I live), the weather broadcasters get almost gleeful when they talk about tornadoes and high winds. They build up the fear, making us want to watch their shows, and we forget that storms, when handled with common sense are a normal part of the world. Sometimes bad things happen. But, for the most part, wild animals hunker down in their burrows or under cover and wait it out. When they emerge, the world is fresh and new again.

Here’s hoping that no matter what the storm, it leaves us safe and ready to face the day.
